5 luxury/performance picks to splurge on

Getting a pay raise - especially a substantial one - can mean being able to do things you previously might not have been able to afford to do. Like going on a skiing trip for a couple of weeks, getting some much-needed upgrades done to your home, or (if it’s a REALLY big increase) a month of the Foxtel Premium package.

For the car enthusiasts out there though, there’s really only one viable option when we find ourselves in a bit of a cash surplus, isn’t there? Either seeing to a few cheeky mods on our current ride, or…

Trading it in and upgrading to something we’ve been dreaming about for ages but haven’t quite been able to reach, finances-wise!

If you’re not yet hell-bent on one particular make and model, though, here are 5 sports sedans that’ll tickle your innermost love for something glorious and make you feel like a kid in a candy store every time you hop behind the wheel.

Mercedes Benz E63 S AMG - Driveaway from $253,900*

As if a 4-litre V8 wasn’t enough, Merc has gone and added a twin-turbo setup to the E63 s AMG’s engine which, all working in unison, creates a ridiculous 450 kilowatts of power with 850Nm of torque powering its all-wheel-drive system. Oh, and let’s not forget the 9-speed auto transmission, which is referred to by AMG as using Multi-Clutch Technology (MCT), which will take the car from a dead stop to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds.

To add, there’s more tech that’s been injected into it than you’d probably find in a late-model Airbus A380 to keep you safe, secure, entertained, warm and comfortable while you’re pushing the upper limits of the speedo - in controlled conditions, of course!

All in all, if you enjoy piss-your-pants fun on four wheels but still need a four-door for whatever reason, the E63 S AMG is the car that’ll do it for you.

Bit too pricey? Go for the CLA45 S Coupe - a hell of a lot of Merc priced from $110,835* plus on-road costs.

BMW M5 Competition - Driveaway from $244,900*

Yeah, we all know. You’re either in the Merc camp or the BMW camp and there’s no switching allowed. So if you prefer life on the Beemer side, forget the AMG and get yourself an M5 Competition from BMW.

It’s the fastest M5 that’s ever been developed, with BMW somehow getting more out of the same 460kW 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 8-speed auto. It’ll do 0 to 100 in just 3.3 seconds. The new 12.3-inch infotainment screen is a welcome upgrade from its previous one, and both interior and exterior styling are exceptional (and so very BMW).

All in all, a great high-performance sedan with all the bells and whistles.

Bit too pricey? Go for the M3 Competition, a delightfully powered Beemer for $144,900* excluding options.

Audi RS7 Sportback - Driveaway from $223,877*

If you’re a petrol-head you’ve probably heard a lot about the RS6 Avant wagon, an absolute monster of a vehicle that, to the layperson, looks like nothing more than a car to take the kids to sport practice in.

Well, the RS7 Sportback is the sedan variant, and has all of the lovely mechanical goodies the RS6 Avant wagon has but in a more aggressive, mean-looking body. Its interior is unsurprisingly top-shelf in both comfort as well as design and includes little quirks like light-up seat belt buckles that are a great touch.

So how does it perform? As you might’ve guessed because of where its guts have come from, the 4-litre V8 with its two twin-scroll turbos deploy an eye-watering 441kW of power at 6000rpm. Though, if you really want to push it to 7000rpm it’ll handle it like the superbly-engineered piece of machinery it is (the redline doesn’t even start until 7000rpm, either). Oh, and it’ll do 0-100 in a mere 3.6 seconds. Too.

A sensational performance sedan option wherever your manufacturing loyalties lie.

Bit too pricey? Go for the RS5 Sportback, delivering an immense amount of power for just north of $150,000*.

Tesla Model S Plaid - Driveaway from $186,990*

Whatever you think of Tesla founder Elon Musk, there’s no denying the cars that have come out of there are breathtakingly quick. Take the Tesla Model S Plaid, for example; a really gorgeous-looking car that is claimed to be able to do 0-100 in 2.1 seconds and a top speed of 322 k’s an hour (holy s&*% that’s fast).

It’s not hard to understand how it gets such a quick naught to a hundred time considering it’s running three electric engines which in combination push out a crazy 761kW (yup, you read that correctly). So maybe their promise of it being the highest performing sedan ever built might actually be correct. Plus, it’s said to deliver a driving range of anywhere up to around 630 kilometres before requiring another charge.

Coming to Aussie shores hopefully sometime in 2022, you’d be hard-pressed to find another vehicle to experience the G force the Model S Plaid offers.

Bit too pricey? Go for the base Model S Long Range Plus which is a helluva lot of car for its $129,990 * (plus on-roads) price tag.

Porsche Taycan Turbo - Driveaway from $276,300*

Can not, will not, must not make a list of top performance sedans without mentioning the one and only Taycan. But let’s take it another step further with the Taycan Turbo, because why not?

It has a claimed 0-100 in an extremely impressive 2.8 seconds - which has actually been bested by a few test drivers- which is achieved by the 460kW (500kW with overboost) of power generated from its dual AC synchronous electric motors. It has all-wheel-drive, a range of up to 420 kilometres, plus the famous superb handling and all of the Porsche styling you’ve come to expect from the world-leading performance vehicle brand.

They say ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it’, and there are few better ways to flaunt your pay rise than rocking up to the office in one of these.

Bit too pricey? Go for the base model Taycan, priced from $156,300* and an absolute beast of a vehicle.
