Range Overview

The Kia Niro Hybrid range offers customers eco-friendly cars that combine fuel efficiency with a sporty design.

The Niro Hybrid features a 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 77.2kW of power and 144 Nm of torque, coupled with a 32kW electric motor. The combined output is 104kW and 265Nm, and the car delivers power to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The car has a 240-volt, 1.56kWh, and 6.5Ah lithium-ion polymer battery under the rear seat, offering a fuel consumption rating of 4.0L/100km. The Niro Hybrid offers plenty of cargo space, with a capacity of up to 1,405 litres.

The Niro EV boasts a 150kW electric motor, although it now develops just 255 Nm – a drop of 140 Nm compared to the outgoing model.

The car still sends drive to the front wheels via a single reduction gear transmission, with the 64.8kWh battery pack enabling a driving range of up to 460 kilometres – a five-kilometre bonus over the car it replaces. The Niro EV has a CCS2 charge port on the front bumper, and it takes approximately 43 minutes to get from 10 to 80 per cent with a fast charger due to a maximum rate of less than 100kW.

Features and Tech

The Niro Hybrid comes with a range of features designed to enhance both the driving experience and passenger comfort. For example, on the exterior, the car features LED headlights and taillights, which look great and provide improved visibility in low-light conditions. The Niro Hybrid also has a sleek, aerodynamic design that helps to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency.

Inside the car, the Niro Hybrid is loaded with high-tech features. One standout feature is the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system.

The car also has a wireless phone charger, a rear-view camera, and advanced driver assistance features. Some include the lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.

When it comes to styling, the Niro Hybrid has some unique features. One of the most notable is the car's "tiger nose" grille, a signature feature of many Kia models. The grille gives the car a bold look that distinguishes it from other hybrid vehicles.

The Niro Hybrid also has sleek, sculpted lines and a low-slung profile, which not only looks great but also helps to reduce wind resistance and improve fuel efficiency.

In terms of speed, the Niro Hybrid is no slouch. The car is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, producing 139 horsepower.

The car has a top speed of around 177 km/hr and can accelerate from 0 to 100km in around 8.6 seconds. While this may not be the fastest car on the road, it's certainly quick enough for most drivers.

Cabin/boot space

The Niro Hybrid is a five-seater SUV with cloth upholstery and six-way manually adjustable front seats as standard. If you want to upgrade, you can choose from a combination of cloth and leather upholstery, full vegan leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats. It also has a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, driver's seat memory settings, a heated steering wheel, and a vegan-leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

While the cargo space behind the rear seats is lacking for an SUV hybrid at 22.8 cubic feet, you can quickly compensate for it by folding down the second row and getting a generous 63.7 cubic feet of space. However, the Niro plug-in hybrid has even less space, with only 19.4 cubic feet behind the second row and a maximum of 54.6 cubic feet.

The Niro provides comfortable front seats with ample head and legroom, even for taller folks. And for those travelling with young children, the Niro has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. Plus, a tether anchor for the rear middle seat makes it easy to install child safety seats.

As mentioned earlier, the Niro Hybrid has various high-tech features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system is intuitive and easy to use, with large icons and a responsive interface.

The system also comes with a range of apps, including Google Maps, Spotify, and WhatsApp, which can be accessed through the car's built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety features

The Kia Niro Hybrid is a popular choice for drivers who prioritize safety. It comes equipped with a variety of advanced safety features. Here are some of the critical safety features you'll find in the Niro Hybrid:

  • Autonomous emergency braking - If the Niro's sensors detect an imminent collision, this system can apply the brakes automatically. This will help to prevent or reduce the severity of an accident.

  • Airbags - The airbag system includes front-impact airbags that protect the head during frontal crashes. The side impact airbags for the torso during side collisions. Overhead airbags for the head during side collisions or rollovers. And knee airbags to protect the lower extremities.

  • Stability control - Stability control reduces engine power and applies brakes when the handling limits have been exceeded to prevent the driver from losing control.

  • Driver attention warning - This system uses sensors to monitor your driving. It alerts you if it detects signs of drowsiness or distraction.

  • Hill-start assist - This safety feature holds the brakes momentarily when starting on an incline. Thus, preventing the car from rolling backwards.

  • Seatbelt pretensioners - They automatically tighten seat belts to place the occupant in the optimal seating position during a collision.

  • Excellent security system - Kia Niro Hybrid has a security system that anticipates and/or detects unwanted vehicle intrusion. It also has an ignition disable device to prevent the engine from starting without the correct key.

  • Anti-lock brakes - Anti-lock brakes allow the vehicle to turn while braking by modulating brake pressure.

The Kia Niro Hybrid's ANCAP safety rating is five stars, and it offers a range of standard features that make it stand out among other cars in its class.

For example, the standard blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert features are not always included on other vehicles in the class. And the Niro's driver attention warning system is a relatively new technology that isn't as common on other cars.
